Battles against privatisation and cuts

Poetry vs PFI

Four quatrains inspired by The People vs PFI conference on 1 November 2014:

I

PPP is Public-Private
Partnership - but how?
The same way steak's a partnership
Of a butcher and a cow.

II

PFI is Private Finance
Initiative, but still there's
One more thing that it stands for:
Profiting From Illness

III

Plundering London Underground - speaking with the German left

Die Linke
16/07/2020 - 18:00

An online discussion on experiences from the resistance against the partial privatisation of the London Tube with:

  • Janine Booth (author “Plundering London Underground: New Labour, Private Capital and Public Service”)
  • Phil Rowan (RMT Finsbury Park International officer)

The event takes place at 19:00 Berlin time, 18:00 UK time.

Covid 19, democratic ownership and the future of the economy

Another Europe
16/05/2020 - 13:00

Janine will be speaking from a transport worker's perspective at this online event hosted by Another Europe Is Possible.

In 2008, the state bailed out the banks. In 2020, it is bailing out the whole of capitalism. State intervention and public borrowing are at their highest level in peacetime history.

The Big J (and the NHS) vs The Big C

BJvBC tour leaflet

Poet, author and activist Janine Booth was part of the ranting poetry movement in the 1980s, performing as ‘The Big J’. In late 2016, she discovered a strange indentation in her right breast and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her new book is a collection of candid and enthralling journal extracts, poetry, meticulous research and substantive politics, in which Janine details her journey from detection and diagnosis, through surgery, to ‘getting over it’.
Janine will be reading from the book at a series of events around the country, where she will be joined by comedian Kate Smurthwaite, local poets, and/or speakers from local campaigns in defence of the NHS.
