Presented by Lewes CLP, Painting the Town Red is a day to learn the cultural activism skills to do Labour politics differently via music, spoken word, children's activities and graphic design. No previous experience necessary, open to all members of the Labour Party and supporters. The ambition? To create a 'Paint the Town Red' festival ,across the towns of Sussex, Surrey, Kent and beyond, in October 2020.
Introduced by Lynne Segal long-standing socialist-femiinst Lynne's most recent book Radical Happiness: Moments of Collective Joy is a passionate call to rediscover the personal and political pleasure that emerges when we share our lives. The session will be followed by a book signing with Lynne.
The day then divides into 4 themed workshops each aiming via performance, presentation and skills-sharing to provide practical outcomes towards putting on a 'Paint the Town Red' event in your town
Music with Joe Solo award-winning folk singer, punk rocker, rabble-rousing co-founder of the 'We Shall Overcome' musical anti-austerity movement. Joe will be joined fellow artists, promoters, andDJs across a range of musical genres to share the skills and contacts to create a gig to remember.
Spoken Word with Janine Booth as The Big J Janine was part of the ranting poetry movement in the 1980s. In 2014, Janine, a trade union activist with the RMT and co-Chair of the TUC Disabled Workers' Committee took up the muse again, now performing as an angry middle-aged woman poet. The Picket Line Poets collective will be on hand to add their know-how towards creating a night mixing politics, poetry and pints.
Children's activities with Michael Rosen, Jane Rosen and Kim Reynoldsreading from and answering children's questions (grown ups at our discretion) about the book they edited together Reading and Rebellion : An Anthology of Radical Writing for Children 1900-1960. This session will be followed by a book signing with the editors. .
Graphic Design with Kevin Kennedy Ryan founder of Labour Party Graphic Designers, an independent network of creatives Kevin's presentation will explore the best art and design produced by the past and present Left. And then a Labour Party Graphic Deisgners group workshop to help develop localised visual identities for CLP's 'Paint the Town Red' events
The closing session takes as its theme Doing Labour Politics Differently.How might a wave of Paint the Town Red' events form the basis to both inspire and re-energise our existing Labour audience but also connect the party with those we don't currently have any connection with at all?
