Lip Service

Lip Service

for Claire

Maybe one day we won’t celebrate each month anniversary
Or one day our “I love you”s will start sounding rather cursory
The period of honeymoon, it will not last forever
Maybe one day we won’t figure out the crossword clues together
Or I won’t drift off to sleep insanely grinning every night
But I will always kiss you at a red traffic light

I’ll always lean over, all hopeful and keen
I’ll always pucker up before the traffic light turns green
Perhaps there’ll come a time when we won’t go on steam train trips
But traffic lights will always bring a tingle to my lips
Maybe one day our fantastic will only be alright
But I will always kiss you at a red traffic light

For you and me it’s the rule of the road
It’s the unwritten chapter of the Highway Code
Maybe one day we won’t dance to Alexa’s selection
And perhaps we’ll find some quieter ways to share our affection
Maybe one day we’ll find romance rather tacky, even trite
But I will always kiss you at a red traffic light

I’m confident we’ll always find each other a delight
And I know I’ll always kiss you at a red traffic light
