In 2012, the awarding of the franchise for the West Coast railway route descended into chaos, when the government gave the job to FirstGroup in preference to Virgin, then admitted irregularities and started all over again. Two limericks:

Had proved to be quite the gold mine
So two companies squabble
Causing shedloads of trouble
When the railway should be yours and mine

Mr Branson put in a pitch
(His first name, appropriately, Rich)
So the government bums
Re-did their sums
And FirstGroup said, “Aint life a bitch”
